On a Saturday evening in October a packed hall of enthusiastic supporters were joined by the Mayor of Crawley, Cllr. Sally Blake, and the Chair of Horsham, Cllr. Bernard Baldwin, to enjoy an ‘Evening of Entertainment’ – held on our behalf.

The evening was compèred by Richard Tingley who introduced the varied acts with wit and an interesting line in juggling. He also joined Clive Ravens in leading a rousing session of community singing.

Members of two local dance organisations, Olive Anscombe’s ‘Tappettes’ and Sarah Martin’s ‘Simply Dance’, performed energetic routines to Rock and Roll, Jive and Salsa, while young singers from Ifield Community College and Jan Raven’s Singing School produced a very moving compilation of songs from ‘Les Miserables’.

These acts were complemented by Brian Barnes whose slight of hand had everyone astounded, Laura Carter whose pure voice did full justice to a selection of songs from the shows and Amy Roe who impressed everyone with her violin solo.

All the performances were outstanding and everyone who came along had a fantastic time—the Mayor even sent us a card afterwards expressing her appreciation.

The evening was held at Millais School in Horsham and, together with the grand raffle, raised over £1,500 for our work.

Many, many thanks to everyone who was involved or who came along on the night.

Now we’ve recovered we’re even thinking of organising another one for next year. Maybe November 2007? ? ? ? ?   Watch this space………..

A ROYAL APPOINTMENT

It all started with a phone call from Liz . She checked that I was sitting down and told me that what she was about to tell me wasn't a "wind-up".  My first thought was that she was going to tell me off for not having been to any trainings recently.  But no, it was to say that Home-Start had been invited to send two representatives to a reception for Crawley based volunteer groups to meet the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh at Thomas Bennett Community College, Tilgate.

Liz, of course, had to be there and it was decided to put all the volunteers names into a hat.  A visiting Health Visitor picked one name out to represent all 60 volunteers and it happened to be mine.  After getting over the surprise the obvious question was what do I wear?  Then other more serious questions came to mind. What if the Queen actually spoke to me?  How do I encompass all Home-Start's varied activities in a few simple words and in a very short space of time?  The reception was only for 15 minutes and there were to be about 80 people present.

Then came the news that the Queen had injured her back and was cancelling some of her engagements but her visit to Crawley went ahead in a shortened form. Of course, we had to arrive well before time but this gave Liz plenty of opportunity to do some networking. We watched the Royal Party arrive, admired their Bentley and returned to the Drama Studio.

We were split into small groups of about ten people, Liz being in charge of ours. Her duty was to be introduced to Prince Philip by Liz Lamport (an ex co-ordinator of Home-Start and now Manager of Crawley Council for Voluntary Service) and then to introduce us to him individually. The Queen should have visited our group as well but as things were behind schedule we didn't get to meet her.

After it was all over Liz and I agreed that being invited to the reception showed that the powers-that-be in Crawley acknowledge all the hard work of everyone connected with Crawley and Horsham Home-Start.

So a Right Royal Thank You to Everyone!

Jean
